Class Levels and Description


Parent and Child—ages 6 to 36 months
Water adjustment and water acclimation,
Entering and exiting water with and with out parent’s help, Shipping and expelling water on cue,breath control and submerging, Learning balance and proper body positions, Buoyancy and back floating , Towing on front and back , Kicking and moving arms on command -and moves towards a wanted object such as toy, and side of pool, Prone launch and prone gliding,safety Tips and handouts for Parents

Pre-School—ages 3-5 years
PIKE:  water adjustment, swim away from wall and swim back w/ help, front & back float 20 seconds w/ or w/o belt, paddle on front, back, & side 10 yds. w/ belt,5 ft. w/o, know how & when to call for help, reaching assist, use PFDs.
EEL:  jump in and return to side w/ little help, paddle on front, back, & side 25 yds w/ belt, 15 feet w/o belt, recognize danger, jump in w/ PFD - paddle & kick on front & back 10 yds., scull 1 min., pass, catch, dribble ball.
RAY:   diving safety rules, front & back float 30 sec., tread water 30 sec w/ belt, HELP position, bobbing, swim on front, back, side 25 yds w/ belt & 20 ft w/o, begin rhythmic breathing, underwater swim, somersault w/ help,  wet ball skills, throwing assists.
STARFISH: float 1 min, tread 30 sec., swim on front, back, side, 40 ft. w/o belt, swim on front w/ rhy. breathing 25 yds w/belt, somersault, jump into deep water and swim up, surface dive, dive from side, observe rescue breathing.

Youth—ages 6-12 years
Beginner I - POLLIWOG:  Front & back float, jump in & return to side, paddle stroke on front, back, side- 25 yds w/ float belt- 20 ft w/o, recognize danger, call for help, PFD’s, boat safety, reaching assist
Beginner II - GUPPY:  tread water, safety swim (jump in -paddle 15 ft- float 10 sec- swim back to side) PFD’s -help position, swim 25 yds on front, back, side, begin alternating overarm stroke and rhy. breathing, throwing assist. 
Intermediate - MINNOW:  Diving safety & beginning diving, freestyle & backstroke 25 yds, beginning breastroke,  side stroke, elementary backstroke, beginning wet ball, beginning rescue breathing
Intermediate II - FISH:  Front & back crawls, & breaststroke 50 yds w/ open turns, sidestroke 50 yds, beginning butterfly, improve diving skills, improve wet ball skills, first aid and rescue breathing 
Advanced I - FLYING FISH:   Advanced survival skills, lifesaving stroke 50 yds,  healthy lifestyle information, front crawl w/ bilateral breathing & open turns 100 yds, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, back crawl, sidestroke-100 yds, butterfly 25 yds,  beginning flip turns,  play wet ball
Advanced II - SHARK:  Discuss open water swimming, shock, heat and cold related illness, swim inverted breaststroke 50 yds, overarm sidestroke 50 yds, trudgen crawl 50 yds, front & back crawl 100 yds w/ flip turn, breaststroke w/ pull out 100 yds, IM 200 yds, play wet ball game.

Swim lesson policies
Minimum number of participants is 4 for a class to make. Maximum number of participants is 6 for Preschool, 8 for Youth, 8 for Adult, 10 for Parent & Child.
Refunds: A $10 non-refundable registration fee is automatically withheld.  If dropping before class starting date, the full amount minus the registration fee can be returned.  After day two, no fee can be refunded.
Transfers: There is a $10.00 transfer fee for each transfer.  Only 3 transfers per transaction are allowed. A transfer can be requested due to unforeseen circumstances.  Transfer requests must be made by the first day of the session. There is no charge for the first transfer if due to injury or illness.
Children who are not potty trained must wear little swimmers or plastic pants. No diapers allowed in the pool. The use of goggles, earplugs, nose clips, swim caps are permitted in swim class. The use of face mask, snorkels, fins, water wings, or any personal flotation device are not allowed in swim class unless specified by the instructor.
Children 9 yrs and under must have a parent on the pool deck area. If the pool area is too hot the are chairs in the Aquatics Office and on the back deck by the baby pool.
Make-up policy: Due to the indoor pool not being grounded, the pool area will close for thunder and/or lightning. We must clear the pool deck for 15 minutes if thunder is heard, and 30 minutes for lightning. If there is bad weather and the pool must close, we will conduct our Safety Day. On the account of no bad weather during the session, Safety Day is to be conducted during the seventh lesson. Please do not allow your child to skip Safety Day. This is a very important lesson and is part of the YMCA’s swim program. There are requirements on your child’s certificate that are only completed on Safety Day, these skills can only be checked off by the instructor if the child attends class. Make up days for the second storm day of the session are to be held on Friday of that week, unless notified by your child’s teacher.

THE YMCA AQUATICS DEPARTMENT DOES NOT OFFER MAKE-UP LESSONS FOR REASONS OTHER THAN BAD WEATHER OR MECHANICAL PROBLEMS.

Private Lesson Policy: For students registered for private lessons, an instructor will be assigned to you within one week of registration. It is the responsibility of the swimmer /parent to schedule all swim lessons with the instructor according to individual availability. Cancellation of lessons due to any other reason than inclement weather and or pool maintenance must be made by 6pm the day before the lesson. Lesson may be rescheduled no more than three times . If the instructor is not notified the day prior to the lesson scheduled and the swimmer does not show up, the swimmer will be charged for the lesson.  You have six months to complete purchased lessons.
